Programmers - Start 'em young ?

Alice

Say hello to Alice. [ More info here. ]

From their web site......

In Alice's interactive interface, students drag and drop graphic tiles to create a program, where the instructions correspond to standard statements in a production oriented programming language, such as Java, C++, and C#. Alice allows students to immediately see how their animation programs run, enabling them to easily understand the relationship between the programming statements and the behavior of objects in their animation. By manipulating the objects in their virtual world, students gain experience with all the programming constructs typically taught in an introductory programming course.

Oh man you totally stole my post lol! That's ok. I gave this program to my wife so she could use it with one of her young special education students who has a nack for all things technology/science related.

This program is a fantastic tool for young and old alike. Though the characters in the world they provide are cartoonish the OOP concepts that it presents and teaches are fantastic.

If you are an adult and a beginning programmer, don't let the fun theme and interface prevent you from investigate it as a serious learning tool.

Also be sure to watch one of Alice's creators Randy Pausch's Last Lecture, you can find it on YouTube. Randy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and learned he did not have a lot of time left. His Last Lecture is a poignant and moving story about being positive in the face of adversity and the importance of celebrating life. It's a must watch video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo

Reminds me of learning Logo on an Apple II back in the day. Is this Logo 2.0? hahaha

Think MS might respond to this in some way? It's quite interesting indeed.

Great post, Joe. I watched Randy Pausch's thing on Dateline the other night. That guy is a true inspiration to anybody and everybody.
