Replace your crummy boss.

by JoeStagner 5/1/2008 12:31:00 PM

I've had some good manager and I've had some really, um, bad managers.

In my seven years at Microsoft I've had 5 managers and would works for four of them again (meaning they were great !) I can't say that about other work experiences in my career.

My boss is awesome, but if he weren't, I'd go to work for Brad Abrams.

Brad is a Principal Group Manager in the ASP.NET Development Organization here at Microsoft.

So.....

If your are a .NET STAR! and you want to replace your current boss with someone great to work for.....

What has been disappointing in my career so far, is the fact that the majority of CIO, managers I worked with, have literally lacked the knowledge and/or experience in software development. Most of them were good people, but professionaly just not ripe enough to take on such a roles.

I'd the happiest man in the world if I had the chance to work for a knowledgeable and experienced manager.

I live in Boston MA area. So Joe if you know any good place please do let me know...

Thanks!

I used to feel the same way, but I've softened my position on this. I think it's only necessary for a development manager to be a good developer himself is he's NOT a good or experienced manager.

Of the 4 great managers that I've had at Microsoft, none have been commercial software developers with 5 years (if ever). BUT....

They have all had very strong knowledge about what it takes to develop software and they have all had a strong respect for, and understanding of the process.

I thik this has actually made them better managers becuase their focus has been on how to serve the company's needs, not how "THEY" would implement that specific algorythm.
